Ah, yes, I think I've heard that one before. I wish I'd remembered it. I wonder of the "state facilities" were considered a step up or a step down from "working for the county"?

Down south, we call "currently engaged in facilities of our state" as "he's working for the county."

Your blog today really hit home with me. It can be so easy to be judgmental, especially with the people we know and interact with. For me it is easier to be compassionate to my ancestors...their mistakes, and flaws do not impact my life today.

Thanks for sharing!

" Like all of my favorite historical works, it is a book not of names and dates but of contradictions, interconnections and influences." I really enjoy historical books that aren't exactly straightforward as well!

Thanks for being on the tour.

Thank you for this post and for your speculations on what might have occurred. I have a similar marriage that didn't make sense between two immigrants, both from Germany -- one from the north, one from the south, one Lutheran, one Catholic, both parents of small children, one divorced, the other said to be widowed. And I had two marriage dates, no immigration date for the wife, and a whole lot of questions about how they met and when they married -- or when they considered themselves married.

Like you, I have hypotheses, and I will probably never know. But I know far more now because of records left by her first cousin of her own second marriage which should have said nothing at all about theirs, but in fact was the clue that unlocked much of the mystery.

Isn't it fun?

Nikki, I'm so glad you found it helpful. If it makes your project just a hint better, everyone benefits.

Carol, Diane,
Thank you both. In the last few days I've also received emails from distant cousins who neither my aunt nor I have met in person but who were helped by her. It is quite touching.

Dan, I found this post very informative. Not just because you bring up an extremely important point that sometimes gets forgotten in the dust of our research - knowing how and why the resource you're using was created - but also because you bring up several important questions for creators of those sources to keep in mind, and to make known to those who will be utilizing that source. I'm working on an indexing project right now that is being placed on the GenWeb page for the specific county and the answers to those questions you raised should be posted with the index so the users know where that info came from and how the information was put into that format. Thanks for posting this!
